Adoption and Foster Care

Foster Child Adoption

Not all the children are able to be with their biological families and, as a result, may have issues related to grief and loss. Many of the children also have other mild to severe emotional problems such as depression, attachment difficulties, or impulse control problems and need ongoing counseling. Some children also have learning disabilities, medical programs or physical handicaps. Special homes are needed for waiting children in sibling groups of two or more.

Most of the waiting children are over the age of six years, with many children between the ages of 8 to 17 years of age. Occasionally, there are younger children available for adoption but this is not common. The children available for adoption are often of different races: African American, Asian, Bi-Racial, Caucasian, Native American, and Hispanic.

Different families are needed for different types of children. The general requirements, however, are the same as for infant adoption.

There are no fees charged to families adopting waiting children who are temporarily in the state’s legal custody. In most cases, a financial subsidy is made available to assist the family with any special care needed for the child or youth. Ongoing medical insurance (Medicaid) is usually available as well.
