Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive and that starts with access to quality healthcare. As kids get ready for the back-to-school season, Child Saving Institute (CSI) and Charles Drew Health Center partnered to ensure students start the year ready to succeed.
Together, CSI and Charles Drew provided dental cleanings, sports physicals and immunizations to CSI clients and Omaha community members. Nearly 30 children and their families received free and reduced cost healthcare services for a healthy start to the new school year at the CSI campus via the Charles Drew mobile health clinic.
Charles Drew is a local nonprofit, committed to providing quality, comprehensive healthcare in a manner that acknowledges the dignity of the individual, the strength of the family and the supportive network of the community. The organization keeps accessibility top of mind in its practice and minimizes barriers such as cost and location for patients to access care.
For many families, access to healthcare is more than a checkup. It’s about giving children the opportunity to fully participate in school and in the community. A sports physical can be the difference between sitting on the sidelines and joining the team. A dental cleaning can prevent pain that affects a child’s ability to focus in the classroom. When community partners work together to remove barriers, children gain opportunities to build confidence, create friendships and pursue their goals.
Charles Drew’s Chief Medical Officer Eric Sherman, MD, MPH, said that community events like these help make essential healthcare more accessible and are among the most rewarding parts of his work.
“It takes a village of people to provide medical and dental care to the community,” Dr. Sherman said.
The health center’s Senior Director of Dental Services Jenna Palmer, DDS, understands that many patients delay care because of limited access, cost or fear. She said she values listening to patient’s concerns, helping them mange pain and understand their treatment options. Community events like the one hosted at CSI create accessible care and connection that goes beyond one day.
“It’s not just about providing care at one event,” Dr. Palmer said, “it’s about building trust and creating a bridge to continued healthcare services.”
CSI’s Community Outreach Specialist Afrah Rasheed coordinated the event, bringing together partners, families and resources to meet community needs. For Rasheed, the event reflected the power of collaboration and CSI’s commitment to supporting children and families in every step of their journey to a healthy well-being.
“Seeing families walk away with the care they need and the support they deserve is incredibly meaningful,” Rasheed said. “When organizations come together to remove barriers and invest in children’s health, we help create stronger futures for kids, families and our entire community.”
CSI’s President and CEO Jaymes Sime was proud to offer this day of health and wellness for the community.
