Emergency Shelter

Child Saving Institute (CSI) has provided emergency shelter and supportive care for children during family crises since 1892. When the initial orphanage closed, we adapted our services to continue to meet the needs of at-risk children and in 1985 merged with the Children's Crisis Center, a Junior League of Omaha project.

Over the last few decades, we have refined and expanded the crisis nursery concept into a therapeutic Emergency Shelter for children 18 years of age and younger. Today, children and youth are placed in the Emergency Shelter to address their immediate needs for safety. The focus in CSI's Emergency Shelter is always on therapeutic care with individualized service plans that emphasize strengths, identify achievable goals, and reinforce small achievements.

CSI's Emergency Shelter offers a homelike setting for to 12 children and teens. Staff are selected and trained to practice nurturing care and support. The children are encouraged to do chores, have meals together, and participate in group activities. All of the kids attend their home schools and are transported to appointments as needed. Visits with family members are encouraged and facilitated by staff when necessary. CSI also provides the youth with a variety of special outings, like baseball games, plays, concerts, trips to the zoo—opportunities they may not have experienced before.
