History

CSI and Children’s Square share a profound historical bond, with roots dating back to the late 19th century. Both organizations were founded by religious leaders who recognized the need to support children and families facing adversity.

CSI was established in 1892 by Rev. A.W. Clark in Omaha, Nebraska, initially focusing on abandoned and neglected children. Over time, the organization adapted its services to address the changing needs of the community, offering prevention, intervention and educational programs for children and families.

Children’s Square’s origins can be traced back to the Council Bluffs Home of the Friendless, a grassroots response to the devastating 1881 flood that left many in Council Bluffs impoverished and displaced. In 1882, Rev. Joseph Goff Lemen delivered a powerful sermon calling for community action, where he found widespread support. The organization eventually evolved into Children’s Square U.S.A., a non-profit organization serving children and families across Iowa and Nebraska. With a strong focus on mental health, education and long-term family stability, Children’s Square has provided a continuum of trauma-informed care from infancy through young adulthood.

Throughout their respective histories, CSI and Children’s Square have remained true to their founding principles, dedicating themselves to improving the lives of children, youth and families in their communities. Today, as we embark on a new journey together, we honor our shared past and the visionary leaders who laid the groundwork for our continued success.

Programs

CSI and Children’s Square have long shared a commitment to providing essential services and programs that address the diverse needs of children, youth and families. Both organizations have offered a range of support services that focus on prevention, intervention and treatment for those facing mental health challenges, trauma and crisis situations.

Both organizations have dedicated their efforts to serving individuals and families facing significant challenges, including poverty, involvement in the foster care system and marginalized groups that have been historically under-resourced. Our shared commitment to these populations has been a driving force behind our merger, allowing us to expand our reach and provide crucial support to those who need it most.

This merger also brings together our expertise and resources, enabling us to offer an even broader spectrum of services to our communities. Children’s Square’s Psychiatric Medical Institute for Children (PMIC), Crisis Stabilization, Youth Shelter/Residential Treatment, Behavioral Health Intervention Services (BHIS), Learning Center and Aftercare services align seamlessly with CSI’s existing programs.

By combining our efforts, we can provide a comprehensive continuum of care that addresses the unique needs of children and families across Nebraska and Iowa. Together, we are well-positioned to continue delivering vital support that empowers individuals, strengthens families and fosters resilience within our communities. Our shared commitment to comprehensive care ensures that those in need have access to the resources and assistance necessary to build brighter futures.
