Carrying Forward a Legacy of Love

By December 27, 2024No Comments

Once upon a time, when our city was still finding its footing, there lived a couple whose generosity and vision helped shape Omaha into what it is today. George and Sarah Joslyn were not only philanthropists of extraordinary means but also deeply inspiring figures whose commitment to their community transformed countless lives—including that of a little girl named Violet.

A Glimpse Back in Time

Violet’s story begins with her adoptive mother, Sarah, who embodied a lifelong commitment to supporting Child Saving Institute. While Sarah was a member of our original executive board, she was a hands-on advocate for the children in our care. She could often be found sitting in a rocking chair, cradling babies in the orphanage, giving them the love and comfort they desperately needed.

It was during one of these visits that Sarah met Violet, and she and George opened their hearts and home, adopting her and giving her the stability and love she had never known. It was in that moment that Violet’s life—and, in a sense, the future of Child Saving Institute—was transformed.

In 1909, George Joslyn made an extraordinary gift to CSI—$25,000 to fund the construction of a new building at 42nd and Jackson Streets. At the time, it was the largest donation to any Omaha charity, and even to this day, it was a lasting investment in the future of Omaha’s children.

Fast Forward to Today

Now, over a century later, as we expand our building at 45th and Dodge, we are reminded of the Joslyn’s legacy of compassion and generosity. Their belief in creating a brighter future for children like Violet has paved the way for countless lives to be transformed in our 132-year history.

Just as the Joslyn’s opened their hearts to Violet, today there are children just like her, waiting for a family like yours to call home. Right now, hundreds of children in Omaha and the surrounding areas need foster families who can provide the love, stability, and hope that they deserve.

The Importance of Foster Families

Right now, in the beautiful state of Nebraska, we’re facing a critical shortage of resources for children in foster care. Over the past year, the number of children placed in congregate care—such as group homes and treatment centers—has increased by 30%. Without enough foster family homes to go around, many children are left in limbo, disconnected from their communities and uncertain about their future.

As a foster parent, you can play a vital role in giving these children a sense of security and belonging while they navigate this challenging time in their lives. By welcoming a child into your home, you can:

    • Provide a safe and stable environment.
    • Help a child heal from trauma and build resilience.
    • Create meaningful connections that last a lifetime.

Every child deserves the chance to stay in the community they come from, surrounded by familiar faces and environments. Foster families are the key to making this possible, and our state and communities desperately need more people like you to open their hearts and homes to these children in need.

How YOU Can Make a Difference

Through stories like Violet’s, we know that one family’s love and generosity can change everything. Today, you can continue the Joslyn’s legacy by becoming a foster parent, and whether you’re ready to take the first step or simply want to learn more, Child Saving Institute is here to support you every step of the way.

If you’re ready to make a lasting difference in the life of a child, we invite you to join us for one of our upcoming foster parent orientations.
